Emirate of Cyrenaica

1949 CE – 1951 CE · capital Benghazi

A short-lived emirate proclaimed by Idris al-Senussi with British backing in 1949, the stepping stone to an independent united Libya.

Origins

Idris, head of the Senussi Order, had allied with Britain in the Second World War. On 1 June 1949, with British approval, he proclaimed Cyrenaica independent at Benghazi under the British Military Administration of Libya, as the UN debated the future of the former Italian colony.

Rule and society

The emirate had its own government and a constitution of 1949, with Britain retaining control of foreign affairs and defence. It was based on the Bedouin tribes loyal to the Senussi, and Benghazi served as its capital.

Decline and legacy

Idris negotiated union with Tripolitania and the Fezzan, and on 24 December 1951 he became king of the federal Kingdom of Libya, with Cyrenaica as one of its provinces.
