Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (1996-2001)
Origins
The Taliban movement arose in Kandahar in 1994 among religious students led by Mullah Mohammad Omar, promising to end the warlordism of the Islamic State of Afghanistan. With support from Pakistan, it took Kandahar in 1994, Herat in 1995 and Kabul in September 1996, proclaiming the Islamic Emirate.
Rule and society
Mullah Omar ruled as Amir al-Mu'minin from Kandahar. The regime enforced a strict interpretation of sharia, banning girls' education and most women's employment, music and television. It controlled about 90 per cent of the country but was recognised only by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In March 2001 it destroyed the Buddhas of Bamiyan. It hosted Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.
Decline and legacy
After the attacks of 11 September 2001, the Taliban refused to hand over bin Laden. A US-led coalition and the Northern Alliance overthrew the regime by December 2001, and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was established. The Taliban regrouped and fought an insurgency for twenty years.
