Jawhar State

1343 CE – 1947 CE (approx.) · capital Jawhar

A Koli princely state in the Sahyadri foothills north-east of Mumbai, ruled by the Mukne dynasty until independence.

Origins

The Mukne family, of the Koli community, established a chiefship in the hills of the northern Konkan; tradition dates the state to 1343. Its early history rests largely on family tradition.

Rule and society

Jawhar was a hilly, forested state with a large Warli and Koli population. It came under the Marathas in the 18th century and under British protection in the 19th, as one of the smaller states of the Bombay Presidency. The Jai Vilas palace at Jawhar was built by its later rulers.

Decline and legacy

Jawhar merged into Bombay State after Indian independence and is now in Palghar district, Maharashtra.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
