Juliana Republic

1839 CE – 1839 CE · capital Laguna

A short-lived republic in Santa Catarina proclaimed by the Ragamuffin rebels in 1839, famed for the exploits of Giuseppe and Anita Garibaldi.

Origins

During the Ragamuffin War, forces of the Riograndense Republic under Davi Canabarro and Giuseppe Garibaldi advanced north into Santa Catarina, seeking a seaport. Garibaldi's boats were hauled overland to the coast, and in July 1839 the rebels captured the port of Laguna, where the Juliana Republic was proclaimed, named after the month.

Rule and society

The republic was confederated with the Riograndense Republic and governed by local supporters under the protection of the rebel army. It had little time to establish institutions. In Laguna, Garibaldi met Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro, known as Anita, who joined him in battle.

Decline and legacy

Imperial forces counter-attacked by land and sea, and in November 1839 they recaptured Laguna after a naval battle in which Garibaldi's flotilla was destroyed. The rebels withdrew to Rio Grande do Sul, and the republic ended after about four months.
