Rio Grande do Sul
Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost province, now a state, of Brazil, bordering Uruguay and Argentina. During the Brazilian Empire it was the scene of the Farroupilha or Ragamuffin War of 1835–1845, in which republican separatists maintained an independent republic for nearly a decade. Accounts of the Brazilian Empire cite the conflict as one of the regional rebellions that tested the young empire.
