Kingdom of Portugal

Also known as Portugal

The Kingdom of Portugal was a monarchy on the Atlantic coast of Iberia, formed during the Reconquista against the Almoravid and Almohad states. From the fifteenth century it launched voyages that built the Portuguese Empire across Africa, Asia and Brazil. It clashed with the Dutch Empire over trade, engaged closely with the Kingdom of Kongo, and its court's move to Rio de Janeiro preceded the founding of the Brazilian Empire.
