Rio Negro
The Rio Negro is the largest left-bank tributary of the Amazon and the largest blackwater river in the world, rising in Colombia and flowing through Venezuela and Brazil. It joins the Amazon near Manaus, where its dark waters run beside the muddy Solimões for several kilometres. In the eighteenth century Portugal secured its valley with forts and missions, organising it as the Captaincy of São José do Rio Negro.
