Solimões
Solimões is the name used in Brazil for the upper course of the Amazon from the Peruvian border to its confluence with the Rio Negro near Manaus. When Europeans first passed down it in 1542, its banks and islands were densely settled by peoples such as the Omagua. It carries pale, sediment-laden water that runs beside the dark Rio Negro for several kilometres after the two meet.
