Gaspar de Carvajal
Gaspar de Carvajal was a Spanish Dominican friar who accompanied Francisco de Orellana's voyage down the Amazon in 1541–1542. His chronicle of the expedition describes large, densely settled chiefdoms along the river, such as that of Machiparo, and the women warriors who gave the Amazon its name. Long doubted, his picture of populous riverbank societies has been supported by modern archaeology.
