Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, was the chief minister of Philip IV of Spain from 1621 to 1643. He sought to restore Spanish power in the Thirty Years' War and to share its costs among all the king's realms through the Union of Arms. His demands provoked the revolts of Catalonia and Portugal in 1640, and he fell from power in 1643.
