Gaspar Pacheco

16th century · 16th century

Gaspar Pacheco was a Spanish conquistador in the conquest of Yucatán. In 1544, serving under the Montejos, he and his son Melchor Pacheco led the campaign that conquered Uaymil, Chetumal and neighbouring Maya provinces in the south-east of the peninsula. Their campaign was notorious even among contemporaries for its cruelty, including mutilations and killings of captives, and it left the region largely depopulated.
