Philip IV of Spain

1605–1665 · 17th century

Philip IV of Spain was king of Spain and Portugal from 1621 to 1665. With his minister Olivares he fought the Thirty Years' War and the renewed war with the Dutch, and the heavy demands of war provoked the revolts of Catalonia and Portugal in 1640. Portugal regained its independence, and Spain's power declined, though his court was painted by Velázquez.
