Reapers' War

1640–1659 · 17th century · Also known as Catalan Revolt · Part of the Franco-Spanish War (1635–1659)

The Reapers' War was a revolt of Catalonia against the government of Philip IV of Spain. Provoked by the billeting of royal troops and the policies of the Count-Duke of Olivares, it began with the killing of the viceroy by reapers in Barcelona in June 1640. The Catalans placed themselves under the French crown, but Barcelona surrendered in 1652, and in 1659 Spain ceded Roussillon and northern Cerdanya to France.
