Belém

1616 · 17th century · Also known as Belém do Pará

Belém is a port city near the mouth of the Amazon in northern Brazil and the capital of the state of Pará. The Portuguese founded it in 1616 as the fort of Presépio to secure the river against French, Dutch and English rivals. It became the capital of the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão in 1751, a centre of the Cabanagem revolt of 1835, and grew rich during the rubber boom of the late nineteenth century.
