Tower of Belém
The Tower of Belém is a fortified tower on the Tagus estuary at Lisbon, built in the early sixteenth century in the Manueline style. It guarded the approach to the city and became a symbol of the Age of Discovery. Accounts of the Portuguese Empire cite it, with the Jerónimos Monastery, as part of the architectural programme funded by the wealth of Portuguese overseas trade.
