Age of Discovery
The Age of Discovery refers to the period from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century when European navigators, led by Portugal and Spain, explored oceans and established sea routes to Africa, Asia and the Americas. It shifted global trade towards Atlantic and oceanic routes. Its effects are discussed in relation to the Ottoman Empire, whose overland trade routes were bypassed, and in comparisons with earlier Chinese maritime activity under the Song Dynasty.
