Gunpowder and firearms
Gunpowder and firearms is a recurring pattern in which access to guns and artillery reshaped warfare, state power and the balance between rival empires. States that mastered firearms could centralise authority, while those that lacked them were often vulnerable. Examples include the Ottoman and Mughal empires, the Songhai Empire's defeat by a Moroccan musket-armed force, and the Ashanti Empire's reliance on firearms acquired through coastal trade.
