Branco River
The Branco River is the main tributary of the Rio Negro, flowing through the Brazilian state of Roraima. Its valley was an approach to the Amazon from the Guianas, and in 1775 Portugal built Fort São Joaquim there to keep out the Spanish and the Dutch. Its upper basin was the subject of a boundary dispute between Brazil and British Guiana, settled by arbitration in 1904.
