Kadana State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kadana

A small Rajput state on the upper Mahi river in eastern Gujarat, in the forested borderland with Rajasthan.

Origins

Kadana was held by a Rajput family in the hilly country of the upper Mahi, on the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The estate emerged around 1600, though its founding is known mainly from local tradition.

Rule and society

The ruler governed forested hills with a sizeable Bhil population. In the British period Kadana was a minor state of the Rewa Kantha Agency. Few details of its rulers are widely recorded.

Decline and legacy

Kadana was merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. The Kadana dam on the Mahi now stands in its former territory.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
