Kagal Senior

1700 CE – 1949 CE (approx.) · capital Kagal

A Maratha jagir under Kolhapur held by the Ghatge family, which gave Kolhapur its reforming Maharaja, Shahu.

Origins

Kagal was the seat of the Ghatge family, Maratha chiefs with a long record of service under the Bijapur sultanate and the Maratha kings. By around 1700 they held Kagal as a jagir, later divided into senior and junior branches, as feudatories of Kolhapur State.

Rule and society

The chiefs governed a small territory south of Kolhapur under its overlordship. The family was closely tied to the Kolhapur court, and in 1884 Yeshwantrao Ghatge, son of the chief of Kagal Senior, was adopted into the Kolhapur royal house, becoming the reforming Maharaja Shahu.

Decline and legacy

Kagal merged with Kolhapur into Bombay Province in 1949 and became part of Maharashtra in 1960. It is now a town in Kolhapur district.
