Kolhapur State

1710 CE – 1949 CE (approx.) · capital Kolhapur

The senior surviving Maratha state of Shivaji's line, founded by Queen Tarabai and made famous by the social reformer Shahu Maharaj.

Origins

After the Maratha succession dispute that followed the release of Shahu in 1707, Tarabai, widow of Rajaram, set up a rival court for her son Shivaji II, settling at Kolhapur by around 1710. The Treaty of Warna in 1731 divided the Maratha kingdom between Satara and Kolhapur.

Rule and society

The Chhatrapatis of Kolhapur ruled the fertile Panchganga valley. Shahu, who reigned from 1894 to 1922, founded schools and hostels, reserved posts for non-Brahmin and backward castes in 1902, and supported the Satyashodhak movement. It was a nineteen-gun salute state.

Decline and legacy

Kolhapur merged into Bombay Province in 1949 and became part of Maharashtra in 1960. The royal family remains influential in the city.
