Tarabai

1675–1761 · 18th century · Also known as Tarabai Bhosale

Tarabai was a Maratha queen, the widow of Chhatrapati Rajaram. After his death in 1700 she ruled as regent for her young son Shivaji II and led the Maratha resistance against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. When Shahu was released by the Mughals in 1707, she contested his claim, and her court became the separate line of Kolhapur. In old age she was a powerful figure at Satara, where she died in 1761.
