Katosan State

1600 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Katosan

A minor chiefship of the Mahi Kantha country in northern Gujarat, one of its many small hereditary holdings.

Origins

Katosan was one of the petty estates of the Mahi Kantha region whose rulers held a small group of villages from around 1600. Its origins are known mainly from local tradition and colonial gazetteers.

Rule and society

The Thakor paid tribute through the Gaekwads of Baroda and was supervised by the British Mahi Kantha Agency. Standard references record little beyond its status as a minor non-salute state.

Decline and legacy

Katosan was merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in present Mehsana district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
