Kharsawan State

1650 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Kharsawan

A small Singh Deo state of Chota Nagpur, remembered for the police firing on Adivasi protesters at its merger in 1948.

Origins

Kharsawan was founded by a younger branch of the Singh Deo family of Porahat, the line that also ruled Seraikela State. The register dates its separate existence to around 1650.

Rule and society

The Rajas governed a small forested territory largely inhabited by Ho and other Adivasi communities, with some iron and copper resources. It came under British protection in the early 19th century and later the Eastern States Agency.

Decline and legacy

On 1 January 1948, as Kharsawan was merged into Orissa, police fired on an Adivasi gathering opposing the merger, killing many. The state was transferred to Bihar later that year and now lies in Seraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand.
