Kingdom of Tanahun
Origins
Tanahun was founded by a branch of the Sen dynasty of Palpa in the early 16th century, after the realm of Mukunda Sen was divided among his heirs. It held hill country along the Marsyangdi and Seti rivers, east of the Kingdom of Palpa and south of the Kingdom of Lamjung.
Rule and society
As one of the Chaubise Rajya, the twenty-four principalities of the central hills, Tanahun was ruled by Sen kings who were linked by marriage to other hill dynasties. Little is recorded of its administration. In the 18th century its ruler Trivikram Sen tried to resist Gorkha expansion through alliances with Lamjung and Palpa.
Decline and legacy
The Gorkha forces of the Kingdom of Nepal annexed Tanahun in 1782 during the unification of Nepal under the regent Bahadur Shah. It is now Tanahun district.
