Kingdom of the Magonsaete
Origins
The Magonsaete, perhaps named after Magnis (Kenchester), emerged in the mid 7th century in the borderlands west of the Severn. Their first known ruler was Merewalh, whom later tradition made a son of Penda of the Kingdom of Mercia, though this is uncertain.
Rule and society
Merewalh's family was noted for piety: his daughter Mildburh founded the abbey of Much Wenlock, and other children became saints. A bishopric at Hereford served the people. The rulers were sub-kings under Mercian overlordship, and the population included many Britons.
Decline and legacy
The dynasty disappears from record in the 8th century, and the territory was absorbed directly into Mercia. Its outline survived as the diocese of Hereford.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
