Kingdom of Tondo

900 CE – 1589 CE (approx.) · capital Tondo

A Tagalog trading polity on Manila Bay, named in the Laguna Copperplate Inscription of 900 and ruled by Lakandula when the Spanish arrived.

Origins

The Laguna Copperplate Inscription, dated 900 and the oldest known document from the Philippines, mentions a leader of Tundun, generally identified with Tondo. The settlement grew on the northern shore of the Pasig River delta, trading with Chinese merchants, who knew the region as Lusong.

Rule and society

Tondo was ruled by a lakan or paramount chief over a society of maginoo nobles, maharlika warriors and dependants. It traded rice, cotton and gold for Chinese porcelain and silk and had close ties with Brunei. By the 16th century parts of the elite had adopted Islam, while most people kept indigenous beliefs.

Decline and legacy

After Miguel Lopez de Legazpi took Maynila in 1571, Lakandula accepted Spanish rule and was baptised. In 1587 to 1588 his relatives led the Tondo conspiracy to expel the Spanish, which was discovered and its leaders executed or exiled. Tondo became a district of Manila in the Captaincy General of the Philippines.
