Kummuh

1100 BCE – 708 BCE (approx.) · capital Samosata

Kummuh, a Neo-Hittite kingdom on the upper Euphrates around Samosata, forerunner of later Commagene.

Origins

Kummuh arose after the Hittite collapse c. 1180 BCE in the land on the right bank of the upper Euphrates around Samosata, modern Samsat. Assyrian texts mention it from the time of Tiglath-Pileser I, c. 1100 BCE, when it was a target of raids.

Rule and society

Its kings ruled a farming land of river valleys and wrote inscriptions in Luwian hieroglyphs. Placed between the Assyrian Empire and the Kingdom of Urartu, they usually paid tribute to Assyria; Kushtashpi joined an Urartian alliance against Tiglath-Pileser III and then submitted again.

Decline and legacy

In 708 BCE Sargon II deposed King Muwatalli for conspiring with Urartu, deported its people and made Kummuh an Assyrian province. The name survived as Commagene, later the Kingdom of Commagene.
