Lobetani

400 BCE – 133 BCE (approx.) · capital Lobeton

An obscure Iberian or Celtiberian people of the Teruel highlands, known almost only from the geographer Ptolemy.

Origins

The Lobetani are recorded mainly by Ptolemy in the 2nd century CE, who places them in the mountains of eastern Spain with a town called Lobeton, perhaps near Albarracín in modern Teruel. Their origin and language are unknown.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their society beyond a probable highland economy of herding, and archaeology cannot securely identify their settlements.

Decline and legacy

Their territory was absorbed into Hispania Citerior during the Roman conquest of the interior in the 2nd century BCE. They are remembered only as a name in the ancient geographies.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
