Teruel is a city in Aragon, eastern Spain, the capital of the province of the same name. Founded as a Christian frontier town by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1171, it preserves fine Mudéjar towers and churches, a World Heritage Site. In the Spanish Civil War it was the scene of the Battle of Teruel in the winter of 1937–38, fought in bitter cold.
