Mangal State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Mangal

One of the tiniest of the Simla Hill States, a chiefship of a few villages on the Sutlej side of the Shimla hills.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to around 1500, but little is reliably known of its origins.

Rule and society

Mangal had a very small population and revenue, making it one of the smallest princely states in India. It was restored under British protection after the Anglo-Nepalese War. Its history is poorly recorded.

Decline and legacy

Mangal merged into Himachal Pradesh in April 1948.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
