Mõhu

800 CE – 1224 CE (approx.)

Small ancient Estonian county between Ugandi and Järvamaa, known only from Henry of Livonia's chronicle.

Origins

Mõhu, called Mocha by Henry of Livonia, was a minor Estonian district in the east-central part of the country, between Ugandi, Vaiga and Järvamaa. It appears only briefly in the chronicle of the Livonian crusade in the early 13th century.

Rule and society

Like other Estonian lands, it was probably a union of a few parishes led by elders, with a hillfort for refuge. Nothing specific is recorded of its leaders or customs.

Decline and legacy

Mõhu was subdued with neighbouring districts during the conquest of Estonia, completed in 1224, and passed into the Bishopric of Dorpat.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
