Morvi State

1698 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Morbi

A Jadeja Rajput state of Kathiawar founded by a displaced heir of Kutch, later known for its railways, port and tile and clock industries.

Origins

Morvi was founded in 1698 by Kanyoji, the eldest son of the Rao of Kutch, who had been passed over for the Kutch throne. He established himself on the Machhu river in northern Kathiawar.

Rule and society

The Thakore Sahibs ruled a territory of cotton farms with a port on the Gulf of Kutch. Waghji and Lakhdhirji in the late 19th and early 20th centuries built a light railway, tramway and Navlakhi port and fostered local industry. It was an eleven-gun salute state.

Decline and legacy

Morvi merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. Morbi is now a centre of ceramic tiles and clocks.
