1292 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Narsinghpur

A small princely state on the Mahanadi in central Odisha, one of the Orissa Tributary States ruled by local Rajas until 1948.

Origins

Tradition places the foundation of the ruling family in the late 13th century, but its early history is not well recorded.

Rule and society

Narsinghpur was a small agricultural and forested state on the north bank of the Mahanadi, west of Cuttack. It paid tribute to the Marathas in the 18th century and from 1803 was one of the Orissa Tributary Mahals under British supervision.

Decline and legacy

Narsinghpur merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now part of Cuttack district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
