Rairakhol State

1500 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Rairakhol

A small, forested princely state in western Odisha, one of the Garhjat states ruled by local Rajas until 1948.

Origins

The ruling family was connected with the Chauhan rulers of Sambalpur State, and tradition dates the state to around 1500. Its early history is poorly recorded.

Rule and society

Rairakhol was a hilly, thinly populated state of forest and small farms. It was part of the Sambalpur group of chiefships under the Marathas and came under British supervision in the 19th century, joining the Orissa Tributary States in 1905.

Decline and legacy

Rairakhol merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now in Sambalpur district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
