Rhenish Republic

1923 CE – 1924 CE · capital Koblenz

Separatist state proclaimed in the occupied Rhineland in 1923 with French backing, which collapsed amid popular hostility.

Origins

During the hyperinflation and the Franco-Belgian occupation of the Ruhr in 1923, Rhenish separatists sought a state independent of Prussia and Berlin. In October 1923 armed groups seized town halls in Aachen, Koblenz, Trier and other towns, and a Rhenish Republic was proclaimed, with a provisional government in Koblenz led by Josef Friedrich Matthes and Hans Adam Dorten.

Rule and society

The republic controlled little beyond public buildings occupied with the tolerance of French and Belgian troops. It had no administration, money or popular support, and its armed bands requisitioned food and goods. In November 1923 local residents fought separatists in the Siebengebirge near Aegidienberg, and a related separatist government in the Palatinate was ended by the assassination of its leader in January 1924.

Decline and legacy

Faced with hostility and British opposition, France withdrew support, and the movement collapsed by early 1924. The Rhineland remained part of Prussia within the Weimar Republic.
