Talcher State

1471 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Talcher

A princely state on the Brahmani river in Odisha, whose territory held the Talcher coalfield, today one of India's largest.

Origins

Tradition dates the ruling family to the late 15th century, but little is reliably known about its origins.

Rule and society

Talcher was a small inland state of farmland and forest, tributary to the Marathas and, from 1803, one of the Orissa Tributary Mahals under British supervision. Coal mining began there in the early 20th century. In 1938 Praja Mandal agitation against the Raja led tens of thousands of subjects to leave the state in protest.

Decline and legacy

Talcher merged into Orissa on 1 January 1948 and is now an industrial town in Angul district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
