Tetouan under al-Mandri

1484 CE – 1567 CE (approx.) · capital Tetouan

Tetouan refounded by exiles from Granada under the al-Mandri family, a corsair city ruled for a time by the famous Sayyida al-Hurra.

Origins

Tetouan had lain in ruins since a Castilian raid around 1400. Around 1484, Ali al-Mandri, a military leader from the Emirate of Granada, rebuilt the town with Andalusi refugees, with permission from the Wattasid Sultanate, as a base against the Portuguese at Ceuta.

Rule and society

The Andalusi elite ran Tetouan as an autonomous city, rebuilding walls and the medina in Granadan style. Corsairs operating from its river raided Spanish and Portuguese shipping and coasts, bringing captives for ransom. After the death of her husband, a Mandri ruler of the city (sources differ on whether he was the founder or a kinsman), Sayyida al-Hurra, daughter of the founder of the Emirate of Chefchaouen, governed from about 1515 to 1542 and dealt directly with Portugal and Spain.

Decline and legacy

Sayyida al-Hurra was deposed in 1542, and the Mandri family's influence waned as the Saadi Sultanate extended its control over northern Morocco in the 1560s. The Andalusi heritage of Tetouan's medina, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, remains.
