Tetouan

Also known as Tétouan, Tettawan

Tetouan is a city in northern Morocco, close to the Mediterranean coast below the Rif mountains. It was refounded at the end of the 15th century by Muslim refugees from Granada under Ali al-Mandri and later governed by his daughter-in-law Sayyida al-Hurra. From 1913 to 1956 it was the capital of the Spanish protectorate in Morocco, and its walled medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
