Jbala
Jbala is a mountainous region of north-western Morocco, between Tangier, Tetouan and the Rif, and the name of the Arabic-speaking people who live there. Its hills, with towns such as Chefchaouen, were long largely independent of the sultans and were a centre of resistance to the Portuguese and later the Spanish. From 1912 to 1956 most of it formed part of the Spanish protectorate in Morocco.
