Tiberina Republic

1798 CE – 1798 CE · capital Perugia

A short-lived republic proclaimed in Perugia in 1798, quickly absorbed into the French-backed Roman Republic.

Origins

In February 1798, as French troops overthrew papal rule in Rome, patriots in Perugia and the upper Tiber valley proclaimed a republic named after the river, taking over the government of Perugia and nearby Umbrian towns.

Rule and society

Known mainly from local records, the Tiberina Republic was a provisional government of local patriots under French protection. It replaced papal officials, planted liberty trees and adopted republican symbols.

Decline and legacy

Within weeks, in 1798, it was merged into the Roman Republic (1798–1799), and Perugia became a department capital of that state.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
