Velabri

100 CE – 200 CE (approx.)

People of south-west Ireland recorded by Ptolemy, usually placed on the Atlantic coast of Kerry beside the Iverni.

Origins

The Velabri are known only from Ptolemy's Geography of about 150, which places them on the south-west coast of Ireland, south of the Gangani (Ireland) and west of the Iverni, roughly in modern County Kerry. Ptolemy's information on Ireland came from earlier reports by sailors along the Atlantic coast.

Rule and society

Nothing is recorded of their rulers, settlements or customs. The peninsulas of Kerry were a land of stone forts, promontory forts and pastoral farming, and the region later produced many ogham stones, showing that Irish-speaking communities with strong lineage traditions lived there by the 5th century.

Decline and legacy

The Velabri do not appear in any later source, and no Irish population name has been securely matched with theirs. Their region later formed part of the Kingdom of Munster and the lands of peoples such as the Corcu Duibne and the Ciarraige Luachra.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
