Viromandui

300 BCE – 57 BCE (approx.)

Belgic people of the upper Somme whose name lives on in the Vermandois and the town of Vermand.

Origins

The Viromandui lived in the upper valleys of the Somme and Oise, between the Nervii, Ambiani and Suessiones. Caesar records that they promised ten thousand warriors to the Belgic league of 57 BCE.

Rule and society

Nothing is known of their rulers or institutions. Excavations at Vermand have revealed a large fortified site of the period.

Decline and legacy

They fought beside the Nervii and Atrebates at the Battle of the Sabis in 57 BCE and were defeated. Under Rome their chief town became Augusta Viromanduorum (Saint-Quentin), and the medieval County of Vermandois kept their name.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
