Wav State

1700 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Wav

A small Chauhan Rajput state on the border of the Rann of Kutch in northern Gujarat, ruled by a Rana.

Origins

Wav, or Vav, was held by Chauhan Rajputs who claimed descent from the medieval Chauhan rulers of Rajasthan. The register dates the state to around 1700. It lay in the desert fringe where Gujarat meets the Rann and Sind.

Rule and society

The Rana ruled a dry territory of grazing land and millet fields. In the British period Wav was a minor state under the Palanpur and later the Banas Kantha Agency. Few further details are widely recorded.

Decline and legacy

Wav merged into Bombay Province in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960, in Banaskantha district.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
