Abbey of Saint-Martin of Tours
The Abbey of Saint-Martin of Tours grew up around the tomb of Saint Martin, bishop of Tours, who died in 397, and became one of the greatest pilgrimage churches of Frankish Gaul. Alcuin was its abbot from 796 to 804, and later the Robertian dukes, including Hugh Capet, held it as lay abbots. The medieval basilica was demolished after the French Revolution, and a new basilica now marks the tomb.
