Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune

Also known as Saint-Maurice Abbey

The Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune is a monastery in the Rhône valley of the Swiss canton of Valais, built at the traditional site of the martyrdom of Saint Maurice and the Theban Legion. Refounded in 515 by the Burgundian king Sigismund, it is one of the oldest continuously occupied monasteries in western Europe. In 888 the Welf Rudolf I was crowned there as the first king of Upper Burgundy.
