Valais
Valais is a canton in south-western Switzerland covering the upper valley of the Rhône, with Sion as its capital. Ruled by the bishops of Sion from 999, it saw the communes of the German-speaking upper valley take power and conquer the French-speaking lower valley from Savoy in 1475. It joined the Swiss Confederation as a canton in 1815.
