Hugh Capet

c. 940–996 · 10th century

Hugh Capet was Duke of the Franks and, from 987, King of the Franks, the founder of the Capetian dynasty. Son of Hugh the Great, he held lands around Paris and Orléans and was elected king at Senlis after the death of the last Carolingian king, Louis V. His royal power was limited, but by crowning his son Robert as co-king he secured a dynasty whose branches ruled France until 1848.
