Hugh the Great
Hugh the Great was a Robertian count of Paris and Duke of the Franks, the most powerful noble of West Francia in the 10th century. Son of King Robert I, he did not take the crown himself, but in 936 brought the Carolingian Louis IV back from England and was recognised as duke of the Franks, second only to the king. His vassals included Theobald of Blois, and his son Hugh Capet became king in 987.
