Abraham Kuyper

1837–1920 · 19th century

Abraham Kuyper was a Dutch Reformed theologian, journalist and politician. He founded the Anti-Revolutionary Party in 1879, the first modern Dutch political party, and the Free University of Amsterdam in 1880, and served as prime minister from 1901 to 1905. His idea of 'sphere sovereignty' helped shape the pillarisation of Dutch society into separate Protestant, Catholic and secular communities.
